Environmental Newspaper Company of the Year
The UPM Premier Award

UPM leads the integration of bio and forest industries into a new, sustainable and innovation-driven future. Our products are made of renewable raw materials and are recyclable. UPM consists of three Business Groups: Energy and pulp, Paper, and Engineered materials. The Group employs around 24,000 people and it has production facilities in 14 countries.

Within the UK, UPM has three production facilities, a forestry management business and sales offices for its paper, timber and plywood products. Its paper mills are located in North Wales and south west Scotland. UPM Shotton in North Wales is the largest newsprint manufacturer in the UK with a capacity to produce 500,000 tonnes of high quality 100% recycled newsprint for the UK and international publishing markets.
UPM Shotton's recycling operation recovers more than 650,000 tonnes of newspapers and magazines each year – the equivalent to a third of UK households. Working closely with local authorities and waste management companies, UPM is committed to long term sustainable partnerships helping divert recyclable waste from landfill.
The company's commitment to sustainability extends even further with the use of renewable energy generated from biomass. The combined heat power plant started up in 2006 and is enabled to mill to further reduce its CO2 emissions by 100,000 tonnes per year. This brings the total amount of CO2 emission reductions to over 650,000 tonnes. This exciting development has enabled the newsprint mill to achieve the Queen's Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development which was awarded earlier this year.

UPM Shotton will celebrate 25 years of sustainable success in May 2010. Our passion for quality, environmental performance and long lasting partnership is still as strong today. This is matched by the high quality of entries for the Environmental Newspaper Company of the Year award.

Niche Market Newspaper of the Year
The Newsprinters Award

Newsprinters is the newspaper manufacturing subsidiary of News International. Our goal is clear - to be the best newspaper printer in the world. To help achieve this aim we have invested over £650 million on the latest technologies and equipment from the world's leading suppliers to the newspaper industry.
But it's not just about the nuts and bolts. We recognise that without an expert and motivated workforce even the best equipment in the world will not guarantee print of the very highest quality. That's why we are committed to building the most skilled team in the world of newspaper production.
We have three print locations and when it comes to impressive statistics they take some beating. Across the three sites there are 19 state-of-the-art manroland triple width presses - each the height of four double decker buses - producing an impressive 86,000 full colour newspapers an hour.
Broxbourne in Essex, is on a site equivalent in size to 23 football pitches and is the world's largest newspaper manufacturing plant. Eurocentral, based near Motherwell, houses the largest printing press installed anywhere in the world, capable of running 288 tabloid pages in full-colour straight. Situated in Liverpool, our Knowsley plant is home to five brand new presses.
Every day of the year we ensure that our News International titles reach their huge audience -household names like The Times, News of the World, The Sun, and The Sunday Times.
But we're also geared for other newspaper publishers to benefit from our £650 million investment. We're already printing The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph and we're producing titles for the Champion Media Group and the Glasgow Solicitors Property Centre Guide (GSPC). In late 2009 the northern editions of The Financial Times moved to Knowsley.
Our mission - to be the best newspaper manufacturer in the world. Why not contact us and let us prove it.
